Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner
Choosing the right type of firewood can minimize creosote buildup in your chimney, keeping it cleaner and safer.
Seasoned Hardwood
Burning seasoned hardwood, such as oak, maple, or hickory, is ideal for a cleaner flue. These woods burn hotter and produce less creosote, a tar-like residue that can accumulate in your chimney.
Ensure the wood has been seasoned for at least six months to a year. Properly dried wood not only produces less smoke and creosote but also burns more efficiently.
Avoiding Softwoods
Softwoods like pine contain more resin, leading to more creosote build-up. These should be avoided when possible especially as primary firewood.
If used, ensure they are well-seasoned but primarily rely on hardwoods to maintain a cleaner flue.
Proper Storage and Cutting
Store firewood off the ground and covered to prevent it from getting damp. Cut wood to the appropriate size for your fireplace to ensure efficient burning.
Stack wood with space between pieces to allow air circulation, which aids in the continuing drying process if not fully seasoned.
